At Grace Abbott, we are excited to support 2 Children's Choice Book Awards.
Each year, the Golden Sower Committee in Nebraska nominates 10 books in 3 different categories for children to read and vote for. The award is called the Golden Sower Award and only students may vote (no adults)!
Starting in 2023, Millard also created MIllard Reads! It's Elementary! Each year, teacher librarians from around the district select 10 books they feel are examples of excellence from a variety of genres. Students are encouraged to read and vote for their favorite in the spring. This list will also be used for our Abbott Book club and the district Quiz Bowl competition.
In kindergarten, the Golden Sower nominees will be read as part our Media Skills classes, and students will vote after we have finished reading all 10 nominees.
In grades 1-3, the basket of nominees will spend about 2 weeks in each classroom for teachers and students to read. Students will vote before the basket moves to the next class.
In grades 3-5, students may vote in the chapter book category if they have read at least 4 of the nominees for that award. Classroom teachers will often read a couple of the nominees aloud in class, and there will be multiple copies available for students to check out to read on their own. Voting for both awards will take place in April.
Abbott Reads! Book Club - This club is open to 4th and 5th graders and usually begins meeting in January to discuss and participate in activities involving the 1 different nominees for this school year's Millard Reads! It's Elementary Book Nominees. (Times and Dates TBD)
Abbott Quiz Bowl Team - This extension of the Book Club provides 4th and 5th grade students who have read at least 9 of the Millard Reads! It's Elementary Nominees the opportunity to compete in teams against other Millard elementary students. To be a member of our team, you must read at least 9 of the books and receive a passing score on at least 9 of the quizzes posted below by April 1st. (You may use the book and have two chances if needed.) This will allow our team groups to be formed and be prepared in advance of the competition which will be held after school in April.
